How do you feel about the movie industry shooting movies in Las Vegas?

Posted Comments: post your comment

I want to make one short little comment about this whole works on movies. I believe the people in Las Vegas get caught up in the thought "Oh boy they are going to make a movie here, it makes me proud that they want to come to Las Vegas and do it." I have heard that from a lot of people and so have the movie people. Joan, NM

Well I see that the Union Film Technicians union ran a full page ad in the local paper trying to prove to the local people that shooting movies here really benefits us. Like has been said before, these movie companies need us alot more than we need them and this ad proves it. I hope the new mayor and crew at city hall have people who will do research and find out what takes place in other areas in their dealings with these movie companies. Then sit down with the location managers and tell them this is what we need for each business or residence that is impacted by the shootings according to the number of hours closed or with reduced access. City officials also need to calculate what extra time is spent on traffic control and any other expense and bill these people. I think these costs should be made public so people here can see for themselves what is spent in Las Vegas. The ad states that" Over the years we have shot 72 movies or tv episodes, spent millions of dollars at hotels, restaurants, hardware stores, and lumberyards; employed hundreds of San Miguel County residents and paid a lot of taxes." I just don't believe the millions of dollars part. People of the Las Vegas area, stand up and tell the people in charge that we are not a bunch of uneducated hicks that are willing to take anything thrown our way in exchange for using our unique city and the beautiful surrounding area to shoot movies in which many millions of dollars are made. These movie people act like we owe them something and I guess Las Vegas does give them alot with police protection, blocking traffic, etc. I am not a business person but if I was I would be right in the middle of those jokers making them pay up for any lost business and anything else that they are costing us. It is like some of the other people said, these companies make millions from these movies and by using these little towns like Las Vegas they get to shoot most of their film where there is very little cost for the scenery. How do places like Santa Fe and Albuquerque handle these movie companies? Edward, NM

I do know that there is a lady here in town that does work with these movie people. I do not know what her qualifications are and just what she does. Maybe there should be more attention given to this matter by the new Mayor and Council because there seems to be alot of interest by movie makers in using Las Vegas for their shootings. Being raised in Las Vegas I always try and see the movies that are shot around there. It has been 40 years since I have seen that place but I still recognize most of the areas where the movies take place. It doesn't seem like the town has changed much. The area around Las Vegas is a very beautiful place but the town always looked trashy and the people did not take pride in it and try to keep it clean, hopefully it has changed. Ann, CA

What's the big deal having these movies and their overpaid actors here in Las Vegas? They block the streets and some of the people are rude and think you should bend over backwards to enable them to do their thing. I don't think Las Vegas benefits any from this, maybe a few people or businesses where they have to do some of their sets in. Angel, NM

I think it is wonderful to have movies shot in Las Vegas. Every little bit helps us and I know that there is some money spent here by the movie people. Las Vegas can not expect to have a bunch of money thrown at it just because there are a few shots are taken here. Most of these movies are shot at a bunch of different places. We don't have professional movie workers who live around here so that is the reason there are so few people hired. Jim, NM

I wish the movie companies would be able to use more of the local people in one way or the other. We hear about the Governor going to Hollywood and getting all of this business for NM, but here in this town it does not look like it hardly adds anything to our economy. I believe it is mostly just a bunch of talk. I would like to see some figures of how much these movies really bring into Las Vegas and even to NM. Wonderwoman, NM

It doesn't matter to me if they shoot movies in Las Vegas or not. Some people get all excited about it, but to me it is just a waste of time to try and watch them. It usually takes so long to just shoot one little shot. PT, NM

Maybe Las Vegas needs to do some foot work, like have a person who will meet and deal with these movie people before they come here and tell them " this is what the city of Las Vegas, merchants and any other involved people will do for you in exchange for $----- and other things the company can do for us". I believe there are some people or person who sorta does this but it needs to be someone who can really twist arms and play hard ball with these companies and get the most out of them. Remember they need us alot more than we need them. They intend on making millions and we only a few thousand. Also have all of this on public record so that people like Ken, can see what benefits we are receiving and this will help keep things fair. Eliz, NM

It seems that when movie makers come to town they talk to a certain person. And I can only imagine that that certain person is given , lets say a big check. But what I do not see is something that the town gets after the movie makers have come and gone. So where could have that big check have gone? It would be nice to have something in the town that could remind us of a certain movie that was here. Sorta a token of gratitude for keeping LV as it is. What I mean is that big check could be used for something that we could look at and say wow that is nice. A statue, a fountain, buy out the person who is not willing to do anything with the Navajo Textile building and put in something usable like a mentor center for the youths. So where does the money the town gets for movies go to? Ken, NM

I would like to see what kind of tax breaks and other benefits these film companies get for coming to NM. I know places like Albuquerque and Santa Fe benefit much more than a little place like Las Vegas. But Las Vegas is what many of them want some of their best shootings in so may be Las Vegas needs to have someone try and get more benefits out of these companies. Las Vegas too often just seems to take whatever scrap is thrown our way. It would help if the people of Las Vegas knew more about what it cost our police dept and other costs that the tax payer has to foot and compare that to what ever benefits are received. Many of these movies that are made here or part of, bring the companies many millions. After all, exactly who is suppose to benefit from this? Joe, NM

The people in Las Vegas far the most part like to have movies shot in it and around the area. I do not believe it really helps the area economically because very few of the locals get employment from the movies and that is usually very minimum pay. Also most of the outside people with the movies stay in Santa Fe or else where and drive back and forth, even some sets have even provided their own meals. A lot of the businesses in Las Vegas do not benifit what so ever, matter of fact some even loose business because of blocked streets that keep customers away. The film companies do pay some for this interference but some times it is not adequate and even there are businesses which receive nothing and suffer a lose. Bald Eagle, NM

I like to have movies made in Las Vegas, because I get to see some of the stars and see them making the film. It must bring in some income to our town because the crews and actors have to have a place to stay and eat. Gina, NM
